Travails of a Cyber-Junkie - by Anon E. Mous
Please logon now, I'll tell a tale
As best I can in rhyme.
It's something which is worse than drugs,
But not considered crime.
It all began three years ago.
I bought a Packard Bell.
A geek came out, got me online,
I shouted, "Ain't this swell!"
I slowly learned the things required
To surf and send email.
In time a lots of kin and friends
Hopped on this cybertrail.
I soon acquired Paint Shop Pro
And learned to make cartoons.
And highly graphic email too,
With backgrounds of balloons.
The Address List soon took on wings,
Now nearly digits three.
Connecting to so many folks
Through one small monthly fee.
Eventually the postage stamps
And pen were hard to find.
And sending of a snailmail
Became a real grind.
I found myself then sorting friends,
Those online and those not.
The online folks got scads of mail,
The offlines hardly squat.
Then something happened just last week
Which drove a message home.
It first began when Windows crashed
And I was left alone.
I booted up, it worked a while.
Then poof, a darkened screen,
With weird cryptic messages
Which I had never seen.
I phoned a geek, then brought it there.
He said, "The RAM's too small."
He added more, I brought it home.
More RAM helped not at all!
I took it back, he did more tests
And then he said to me,
"The motherboard is acting strange,
I'll phone you after three."
To make a long, long story short,
It's four days now offline.
I need an email fix real bad
To feed this habit mine.
The first two days were really tough.
I paced the floors and whined.
Withdrawal pains had me in knots,
Like drinking iodine.
To pass the time, I went outside,
Pruned trees, spread Weed-n-Feed.
The brown spots where the mare had leaked
I filled with bluegrass seed.
I cleaned the house and swept the porch,
My place was looking neat.
I said, "Hey Self, I think you've got
This wicked habit beat!"
But like the man who tried the Patch
And then began to brag.
Then bummed the neighbor's MacIntosh
For just one long deep drag.
And so until my PC's back,
I'll do this just for kicks:
I'll go to Tom's and check for mail
To get my daily fix.

New Kids - makes 62
Philip Ruopp of Laichingen, born in 1982, is back online. His paternal grandfather Heinrich Schwenk, also of Laichingen, is a 11th generation descendant of our Konrad. Philip attends the University of Ulm. Welcome back, Philip! (see Gossip/Klatsch column.
Ulrich "Uli" Schwenk and his brother Dieter, both born and raised in Münsingen not far WSW of Laichingen, own and operate a men's fashion clothing store in Münsingen. Their wives operate the SchwenkMode woman's fashion clothing store in the same city. Uli was born in 1960; Dieter in 1962. For further information on these brothers, see the A Word from Uncle Don column below where you can link to their Website and/or their family tree (descent tree). Welcome aboard, Uli and Dieter!
Schwenk Reunion Chairman's Report
I am happy to report that the plans for the Schwenk Reunion in 2001 are progressing nicely. The exact dates for the Reunion are Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28, 200l. Many days off in the future, I know, but we also realize how our time flies, and now is the time to plan for this, one of the greatest of Konrads Kid's Occasions! All of us joining together for a visit, totally and literally "off-line", nothing virtual about it!It's truly the real thing!
In the December SNNL I mentioned that the reunion would be somewhere in the Rapid City area. I hope you "clicked" on that map that Don provided up above in Gossip/Klatsch, when he was gossiping about the Reunion. The Schwenk base of operations will be The Sylvan Lake Lodge which is situated at the edge of Custer State Park and is within easy driving distance to the scenic area of the Black Hills (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind Cave, The Badlands, not to mention the totally awesome scenery of the Black Hills, and many more sites to behold). If you have never ventured "Out West", this area will provide you with one of the best scenic tastes of what the West is really all about!
At the Sylvan Lake Lodge we will have the use of a dining and meeting room at the lodge so that we can meet as a group. There are also rooms in the lodge and individual cabins at reasonable rates for lodging. For those of you who love to camp or have an RV, there is also a campground nearby. Sylvan Lake is a beautiful spot with clear water for swimming. There is playground equipment for children and plenty of hiking trails for individuals or families to pursue. As the days and months do bring us closer to the Schwenk Reunion 2001, I will be informing you of more facts and highlights about the area and the Schwenk Reunion itself. Most everything that we need for a wonderful get-together is ready and waiting for me to finalize.
In order for me to continue with this planning, I will need your help. Please contact me, Jim Schwenk, at this address : jamesrschwenk@earthlink.net with an email message, telling me three things: 1. If you will be able to attend the reunion. 2. How many in your group? 3. What kind of lodging you would prefer?, (a lodge room, cabin, or camp ground.) Also include any questions you might have, and I will respond. You can see why it is imperative that I have this information so that I can tentatively reserve lodging and meeting room size at this time. PLEASE WRITE ME! jamesrschwenk@earthlink.net (You see, Konrad's Kids, everybody writes to Donald and never to me. This is my big chance,so please write! ASAP)
In Memory of Darrel Schwenk 1910-1999
Darrel was born on Nov 15 1910 in Macon County, Missouri, the grandson of immigrant John Schwenk. He married Juanita Teter in 1932. Juanita later became interested in her husband's paternal family history. It is because of her many years of genealogy work that this SchwenkNet eventually could come to exist. Darrel lived his entire life there in the county he was born. He passed away on the 6th of December in Macon. Below is a story written many years ago by Richard Schwenk who knew Darrel and Juanita quite well.
DARREL'S SECOND LIFE
Darrel recalled his experience of near death after the car he was driving was smashed by another car at the intersection of Highways 63 that ran north and south and 36, running east and west. That was about 1930 near Macon, Missouri. At the time of the accident there was only two signs at this crossing. The first read "Pole to Pole" and the other read "Coast to Coast." There was no stop sign. The family physician, Dr. Henry Renick, who lived not far away, heard the crash and came to the rescue. He saw Darrel's neck was twisted and noted he couldn't breath so he straightened it so he could breath and saved his life. Dr. A. M. Rains was there too and said just prior to that, "There may be help for Gus [August Schwenk] but the young man, [Darrel], is dead."
Then Dr. Rains brought Darrel to his office and the young man tore it up in his agony. The doctor gave him 20 grams of morphine to quiet him and he felt a buzzing in his head for a year later and his neck often pained him. Three days and nights he lay in a near coma.
After Darrel's near fatal car accident at the age of 20 he was brought home from the hospital to die as the doctors said he would not live more than two hours from his brain concussion. The doctors had said he would live only two hours and later they estimated two days and later again two months and later maybe two years.
Then after the funeral of his father August, Darrel's mother Mada Ann Schwenk called for Elders S.J. Joyce and Aisworth Moore to come to perform a healing service according to James 5:13-16, to pray and anoint with oil. They ask that those who did not believe in divine healing should leave the room of Darrel. All left except his mom and uncles, the Reverends Fred and Elmer Schwenk. They prayed and anointed Darrel with oil. Then Darrel woke up and asked for his clothes so he could get dressed and eat. His mother believed that he would be saved, but then asked, "Are you sure you want to get up and eat?"
When Darrel; came out in the kitchen his girl friend (not Juanita) screamed and ran out the back door and his two sisters ran into the bedroom because he was revived so suddenly from his death bed. A sudden surge came over him and he was given strength to get up and eat.
Mother Mada's prayer was that the Lord would spare her son and that some day he would use him. But Darrel was almost 40 before he accepted the Lord on April 17, 1950 and Juanita was saved two night later under the preaching of Bill Frazer, a layman. Darrel was reluctant all those years until he finally got up to preach. He said, "from that day on the Lord never let me down when I got up to preach."
A Word from Uncle Don - Tracking down more Kids
continued
From time to time I enter the name Schwenk into a search engine just to see if I can find something new. In early November, this led to a Schwenk clothing store Website in Münsingen, Germany. This caught my attention because I had known there were Schwenks living in this small city some 15 miles SW of Laichingen. I learned several years ago that two grandsons of our Konrad Schwenk had moved from L. to Münsingen (small map) in the late 1600s or very early 1700s. And so I visited this site http://www.schwenk-mode.de/ and learned that two Schwenk brothers, Dieter and Uli and their wives, own and operate this clothing store. After a short exchange of email, I learned that they did not know their paternal ancestry beyond that leading back to their gg-grandfather Gottfried Heinrich Schwenk, a weaver, b. 1816 in Münsingen, the founder of this clothing business. I then ordered the four microfilmed church records of this community from the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I have now traced the paternal ancestry of their Gottfried Heinrich back to Andreas Schwenk, weaver, b. ca. 1570 in Laichingen. And who was Andreas to us? Here is where things get sticky. It is documented that Andreas had a son, Andreas, 1616-1695, a weaver born likewise in Laichingen. It is from this son that Dieter and Uli are descended, not from our Konrad 1601-1686. So how, you may ask, are these brothers in Münsingen related to the rest of us? Well, based on much research I've done, our Konrad was an older son of Andreas Sr. My best estimate is that this is 95% probable. Unfortunately, I have found no way to prove the paternity of our Konrad because the church records were destroyed in 1634 during the 30 Year's War. So, if we accept the high probability that Andreas Sr. was the father of both Andreas Jr. and Konrad, then we can bend the rules just a bit and consider Dieter and Uli as "Konrad's Kids." If you would like to see their descent tree, click here.
This search was perhaps the most interesting one I've conducted. I had
initially believed that the two grandsons of our Konrad who had moved to
Münsingen in the late 1600s and early 1700s would likely be the ancestors
of Dieter and Uli. But as it turned out, those two grandsons married, had
many children - boys and girls. But by the time we enter the 20th Century,
there were no male Schwenks living in Münsingen who descended from
those two grandsons of our Konrad. Those lines died out. Instead, it was
a Conrad Schwenk, weaver, 1676-1733, great-grandson of Andreas ca. 1570,
who moved to Münsingen and married there in 1705 and is the ancestor
of Dieter and Uli.
